What is 316 Stainless Steel
What is 316 Stainless Steel?
The addition of alloys is often done onto steel to increase the desired properties. For instance, the marine-grade stainlesssteel known as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of corrosive environments.
There are various types of stainless steel , 316. Some of the most popular types are L, F, N, and H variations. Each variant is slightly different as well as each is employed for a different purpose. L is a reference to 316L steel having a carbon content below the 316.
of 316, 316L and 316 Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although similar to the Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both have better resistance to corrosion and are more durable when exposed to high temperatures. They cannot be harmed via heat treatment. They can be easily shaped and stretched.
It is not the same as the 316L version. Stainless Steel
The stainless steel of 316L is lower in carbon than 316. However, despite its less carbon, 316L is very similar with 316 in practically every way. Cost is the same, and both are tough and resistant against corrosion, making them the ideal choice for extreme stress situations.
However, for projects that require lots welds, 316L is a better choice , as 316L is more susceptible to welding corrosion in comparison to more 316L (corrosion in the welding). However, 316 can be annealed to withstand welding attenuation. Additionally, it is a ideal stainless steel to use in high temperatures and high corrosion This is why it is so sought-after for marine and construction.
No 316, nor 316L is the cheapest option. The 304 is comparable to 304L, but the price is much lower. It isn't as durable as the 317 and 317L which have a more molybdenum in them and better overall corrosion resistance.
