Silicon Nitride Si3N4 powder: Physicochemical and Physical Properties
Si3N4 has a high temperature insoluble composition. It exhibits high-temperature creep resistant properties. Hexagonal structure. The crystals are hexagonal. Density of Si3N4 by the reaction-sintering technique is 1.8-2.7% g/cm3, whereas the density obtained by hot-pressing is 3.12-3.22g/cm3. The Mohs hardness of the material is 99.5. Vickers hardness ranges from 2200 to about 2200. And microhardness measures 32630MPa. The melting temperature is 1900 (under atmospheric pressure). The decomposition usually occurs at around 1900 atmospheric pressure. The specific heat capacity is 0.71J/g*K. The heat formation is -751.57kJ/mol. The thermal conductivity of the material is (2-155) W/ (m*K). The linear expansion coefficient is 2.8~3.2x10-6/(20~1000).
Insoluble with water. Hydrofluoric Acid is soluble. Temperatures between 13001400 are the temperatures at which air oxidation starts. At 20°C, the specific volume resistance measures 1.4x105 *m and at 500°C it is 4x108*m. The elastic modulus measures 2842046060MPa. The compressive force is 490MPa. It reacts with calcium diazide at 1285 to form calcium dialazide. At 600, the metal transition is reduced, and nitrogen oxides released. The bending resistance is 147MPa. You can make it by heating silicon powder or silicon halide and reacting with ammonia. The resistivity of the material is 1015-1016O.cm. This material is suitable for high-temperature applications.
Other than hydrofluoric acid or hot phosphoric, silicon nitride has a high corrosion resistance.

Silicon Nitride Si3N4 Powder Applications
Ceramic material made of silicon nitride has many advantages, including high thermal stability, high resistance to oxidation, and high accuracy. Chemical stability is achieved by the fact that silicon nitride has a strong covalent bond and will form an oxygen film in the atmosphere. Silicon nitride will not oxidize under 1200. A protective film is formed between 12001600, which prevents it from further oxidation. Silicon nitride will not be infiltrated, or corroded, by aluminum, lead tin silver brass nickel and many other metals and alloys. But it can be corroded, by magnesium, nickel chrome alloy, stainless, steel, or other liquids.
Silicon nitride ceramics can be used as high-temperature components, advanced refractory for the metallurgical and chemical industries, sealing components and corrosion-resistant parts in the chemical industry. They can also be used to make cutting and machining tools.
Due to its ability to form a strong bind with silicon carbide and other materials such as alumina, silicon dioxide, thorium nitride etc. it can be used in different proportions.
Silicon nitride is also used in solar cell technology. In the PECVD process, the silicon-nitride layer can be used not only as an antireflection coating to reduce the reflection, but it also acts as a defect in passivation. The ratio between silicon nitride and silicon nitrogen atoms fluctuates according to the different technological conditions. Different atomic proportions are correlated with different film properties.
Also, it is used in aircraft engines, ultra-high temperatures gas turbines and electric furnaces.
